Dial L for Laugh a Minute

LUNCHTIME shoppers found themselves entertainedat probably the smallest comedy club in the world yesterday.

Steve Shanyaski, a Comedy Store regular who has been described by critics as a mix between Eddie Izzard and Peter Kay, played a series of oneminute gigs inside red British Telecom phone boxes outside Middlesbrough Town Hall.

He said: ?Hand on heart, I?d never been asked to play in a phone box before.

But this sounded fantastic, especially one of the great old red ones. ? The gigs were a preview for the North-East?s newest comedy club, which launches at Middlesbrough?s Town Hall Crypt, tomorrow.

The opening night line-up includes Toby Foster, who starred alongside Peter Kay in Phoenix Nights, Dave Longley, a hotly-tipped comic on the UK circuit, and compere Jason Cook, aregular at the Stockton Arc Catch 22 comedy night.

Promoter Graham Ramsay, of Ten Feet Tall, said: ?There?s been nothing like this in Middlesbrough for far too long, and it?s going to kick-start a Saturday night revolution in this town. ? Tickets cost [pounds]8 from the box office or 01642-729729.
