Lucas Lined Up for Roles in Alice in Wonderland
He became famous playing a loud, obnoxious teenage girl in a pink tracksuit.
But now Little Britain star Matt Lucas, 34, may be heading to the Westcountry to play a very different role to the foul-mouthed Bristolian Vicky Pollard.
The comic has reportedly been snapped up to star as both Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland. He is said to have caught the eye of the director while filming Little Britain USA.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Tim reckons Matt is the perfect actor to play the Tweedles. Matt did a great turn as Mr Toad in the BBC's Wind In The Willows adaptation."
Hollywood actor Johnny Depp is strongly rumoured to be lined up for the role of The Mad Hatter. He has appeared in many of Burton's most successful films, including Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd and The Corpse Bride. Little-known Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, 18, will play Alice.
The adaptation of Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel came to the attention of the Westcountry at the start of August, when thousands of locals and visitors lined the streets outside the New Continental Hotel in Plymouth to attend an extras casting session.
It was revealed last week that Anthony House near Torpoint was chosen as one of the filming locations. The National Trust property closed on Monday for filming, which is expected to take place until mid-October. Its garden and the Woodland Garden are all likely to be used for the 3D film, which is due for release in 2010.
