Rock Band Elbow Wins Mercury Prize
September 10, 2008
The rock band Elbow has won the Nationwide Mercury Prize for the best British album of the past year for its offering “The Seldom Seen Kid.”
The CD is the fourth studio album for the quintet, which first got together 18 years ago.
“I know I’m supposed to be cool and say something coy but it’s literally the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” the BBC quoted singer Guy Garvey as saying at the awards ceremony in London.
Garvey dedicated the prize to the band’s friend Bryan Glancy, who died in 2006 and who the singer described as “one of the greatest men who ever lived.”
In addition to the distinction of being named the prize’s winner, the band also collected a cash award of about $35,000, the BBC said.
