ON THE SCENE – People, trends, gossip and more

Dennis Lehane’s latest novel, “The Given Day,” is set in Boston in 1918, and you’d be wise to expect the usual labyrinth of plot twists, moral ambiguity and urban challenge. Lehane (“Mystic River,”"Gone Baby Gone”) will make an appearance at Brookline’s Coolidge Corner Theatre on Sept. 23. Tickets are $5 at the Booksmith. For more info, call 617-566-6660.

Good eatin’

On the Scene’s a bit of a seafood fanatic, so the slightest mention of the 39th annual Bourne Scallop Festival was enough to fire him up. If you feel the same, the event takes place Sept. 19- 21 at Buzzards Bay Park. There will be scallops by the handful, and plenty of entertainment, rides, games and craft show goodies. Head to www.capecodchamber.org or call 508-759-6000 to get more information.

Who needs Suze Orman?

Community Bank next week kicks off the first in a series of seminars geared toward female business owners looking to grow their businesses. On the Scene is naturally precluded from what will no doubt be good tips and plenty of takeaways, but if you’re of the right gender, head to Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton on Tuesday, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., to learn from World Bank consultant Teri Cavanaugh and technology executive and consultant Teresa Martin about putting your business past any potential roadblocks. Go to www. community bank.com for registration info.

The one, the only…

There are some quarters who don’t think Arlington native and nationally revered funnyman Dane Cook has been celebrated enough, so Mayor Thomas Menino has proclaimed Sept. 17 Dane Cook Day. Details are still emerging, but the comedian will most assuredly be in town, probably to yak about “My Best Friend’s Girl,” his new romantic laugher with Kate Hudson and Jason Biggs, which filmed in the area last year. On the Scene is awaiting his own day of celebration in the city of Boston, and has been advised he’s neither funny nor has a new movie coming out, so he’ll have to enjoy the waiting list.
