Marriage Secret’s Really No Secret

September 17, 2008

An uncle of mine with a quick sense of humor celebrated his 50th anniversary with my aunt. When asked to what he attributed their marital longevity, he said, “I take what she says in one ear and then it goes out the other,” and then he laughed, knowing full well that he did no such thing. And speaking of marital bliss, three couples at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church at 4316 Bruce Road celebrate 50th wedding anniversaries this year. Congratulations go to Ronnie and Lois Vance from Brittany Woods, Bill and Sue Wynn from Miars Farm Apartments, and J.C. and Nancy Dunn from Peppercorn Condominiums.

Insurance companies have a real interest in what Mother Nature is up to. Passing by State Farm on Station House Road, I noticed the banner hanging outside that read, “Are you ready?” I am assuming this is directed toward hurricane readiness. So … are you?

If there are any folks out there looking for a place to volunteer, then Churchland Kiwanis is for you. The club meets for breakfast at the Church of St. Therese on Portsmouth Boulevard in Western Branch on Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast is catered by Ron’s Catering and believe me, it is heavenly. I’ve never seen so many things offered by a caterer for breakfast. There were scrambled eggs, corned beef hash, grits, potatoes, fried apples, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy and much more. The weekly meeting and program follows.

Here’s a cool quote from Missy Hudson, an employee at Michael’s craft store and a member of Chesapeake Romance Writers. “Creative hunger is a gift.” Missy is a crafts coordinator at the store and wants us to remember Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there is a free event with American Girl. Kids make a purse and T-shirt for their American Girl dolls plus take home a mini magazine handout. Sounds like great fun. I have a few of the dolls at my house. it brings back some great memories with my daughters.

Word has it that a new Paradocks is coming soon to the Harbour View area and that prospective buyers have looked at the Paradocks property at 4142 Chesapeake Square Blvd. in Western Branch. Stay tuned for new developments but in the meantime, enjoy the great food and live music.

A sign near the Shops at Chesapeake Square area near Lowe’s stated that William Salon and Day Spa is coming soon. Well, I guess you can never have too many people trained to make a body feel good. I’ve come to love the benefits of a spa treatment. Nothing makes summer feet feel better than a pedicure.

Local musician and troubadour Bob Zentz has performed locally, sometimes giving performances to children at Russell Memorial Library. His latest is a role as a musician in the movie based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, “Nights in Rodanthe,” starring Richard Gere. A preview of the movie is being shown Sept. 25 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Look for the movie to come to Cinemark 10 in Western Branch.

Now that school’s starting, here’s a question for the adults. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned lately? Send your replies by e-mail to pjcolumnist@aol.com or send them to Phyllis Johnson, PO Box 9391 Chesapeake, Va. 23321. I’ll pick four or five responses to print in one of my upcoming columns.
