Monmouth Will Stage Gilbert & Sullivan Classic

September 20, 2008

MONMOUTH – The Theater At Monmouth will once again bring the wry comedy and joyous music of Gilbert and Sullivan to the Cumston Hall stage with its production of “The Mikado.” The comic classic will run Sept. 26 to Oct. 5.

“The Mikado” takes place in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu. The plot revolves around lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo and the machinations of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, who does everything he can to avoid executing anyone. Ridiculous characters and silly plot twists combine with beautiful music to create a joyful atmosphere.

TAM’s production is given a modern setting by Director Bill Van Horn. It features music direction by Marcia Gallagher and choreography by Kris Oness. The set is designed by Rew Tippin; costumes are designed by Jonna Klaiber; and the lighting is overseen by Erik S. Barry.

The lovers are played by Monmouth newcomers Christine Piche and Jeffrey Alan Miller. Mike Speck (Ko-Ko), John Galas (Pooh-Bah), Aly Trasher (Pitti-Sing) and Sarita Scherpereel (Peep-Bo) are also making their debut performances at TAM. Producing Director David Greenham plays The Mikado, and Monmouth character actor Peaches Latour plays Katisha. Michael Emmitt, who is in his third season, plays Pish-Tush.

The show combines professional performers with community members in the chorus, including Debbie Hite of Leeds, Cynthia McGuire of West Gardiner, Sally Walker of Farmingdale, and Ellen O’Brien, Rick O’Brien, Monika Riney and Matt Ellis of Winthrop. Also: Lynette Miller and Andy Tolman of Readfield; Anne Marie Caron and Carol Griffiths of Lewiston; Karen Lipovsky, Wendy Amero and Rebecca Caron, all of Monmouth; Dale McCormick of Hallowell; Charlie Hartman of Vassalboro, Rex Holsapple of Mount Vernon; and Stefan Pakulski of Wayne.
