KCET Expands Audience Reach for ‘BBC World News’ With Station Upgrades and Improved Time Periods; Cleared in Top 30 Markets With Six New Stations Added to Line-Up

Southern California public television station KCET is on track to deliver a bigger audience to a revamped BBC World News telecast tailored specifically for PBS audiences this Fall as part of its distribution partnership with BBC World News. The newscast is cleared in all 30 top markets, 46 of the 50 top markets and is also on track to maintain its U.S. TV household coverage of nearly 90%.

BBC World News will now be seen for the first time on six major public television stations: WTTW/Chicago; WQED/Pittsburgh; KUED/Salt Lake City; KRMA/Denver; WCET/Cincinnati; and GPTV/Georgia Public Broadcasting. The station line-up will include improved time periods in such Top 30 markets as: WHYY/Philadelphia; KQED/San Francisco; NJN/New Jersey Network; KCTS/Seattle; WPBT/Miami; WVIZ/Cleveland; WGBH 44/Boston and KERA/Dallas.

Specifically tailored for PBS stations, the retooled newscast will feature a new team, new format and new set. Additionally BBC News l content will be accessible through PBS station websites for the first time. Mike Embley, a veteran BBC news presenter, reporter and producer, will anchor the show from London, while Philippa Thomas, an experienced foreign correspondent, will contribute daily from BBC's Washington D.C. bureau.

"KCET welcomed the opportunity to partner with BBC World News because it is unparalleled as a news organization, and we believe providing a comprehensive global news service to the PBS audience is more critical than ever, particularly as many domestic news organizations are shrinking their international coverage," said Al Jerome, president and CEO, KCET. "PBS stations across the country clearly agree, responding with enthusiasm to the opportunity to air a newscast drawing upon the proven resources of BBC World News."

"Delivering a newscast tailored exclusively for PBS viewers underscores our ongoing commitment to the PBS audience," says Richard Sambrook, CEO, BBC Global News. "They understand that what affects the world, affects them, and that events in America also have an impact on the rest of the world. That's why they turn to the BBC. We're able to give them the global perspective they want. KCET has done an outstanding job securing primary stations in top media markets, which have committed to time periods that will enable us to deliver high quality, accurate and timely news coverage."

The new 30-minute newscast, produced out of a new state-of-the art London studio, will draw upon the 70 worldwide news bureaus and 2,000 journalists who make up the BBC global news team. This team will provide insight into the U.S. global position as well as how world events are impacting America. BBC World News, reported last year from more than 130 countries, will also deliver breaking news bulletins and special coverage. George Alagiah, one of BBC's leading presenters, foreign correspondents, and a specialist on Africa and the developing world, and Jonathan Charles, a noted BBC business presenter who has also covered major global crises from the field, will present additional BBC World News programs for the early morning and late evening schedules.

For the very first time, BBC World News content will be accessible through local PBS station websites. The digital offerings include video and audio news summaries updated hourly, feeds of the latest news headlines and the World Have Your Say question of the day.

Presented by KCET, the BBC World News station line-up on PBS stations includes:
