New-Look ‘BBC World News’ Uses Unrivaled Newsgathering Resources to Bring PBS Audiences News From Around the World

With a new format, set and team of anchors and reporters, BBC World News is ready to bring the legendary newsgathering talents of the BBC to a new line-up of PBS stations in major markets across the country starting as early as October 1. (Check local listings for exact times).

The 30-minute program, distributed by Southern California public television station KCET, will be produced out of the new state-of-the art London studio and draw from BBC's unrivaled global newsgathering resource of 2,000 journalists and 70 international newsgathering bureaus. This fast-paced newscast aims to bring PBS audiences unprecedented news coverage with a truly global perspective and give insight into how world events are having an impact on America, and how major U.S. stories are having an impact on the world.

In the first week, the newscast anticipates covering the latest developments in the global financial crisis; the frontline in Georgia, in the aftermath of the war with Russia; first reports in the series In the Eyes of the World building up to the election on November 4th; plus an exclusive report from one of the most dangerous cities on the planet. The newscasts will also provide viewers the stories behind breaking news events.

The BBC's Mike Embley will anchor the show from London, with Philippa Thomas, an experienced BBC foreign journalist, contributing daily news from the BBC's Washington Headquarters. Mike has many years of experience reporting news for the BBC and is known as one of the organization's most determined, informed and unflappable anchors.

"Producing a program which we know will be going into so many American homes each day is a great responsibility, but an exciting challenge," said Richard Porter, Head of News at BBC World News. "We're honored to be able to take on the task of bringing the world to America, and placing events in America within their global context. We've put together a great team and we can't wait to get started."

In addition to the newscasts, BBC World News content will be available through local PBS station websites. The co-branded digital offerings include video and audio news summaries updated hourly, feeds of the latest news headlines and the World Have Your Say question of the day.

BBC World News will now be seen for the first time on six major public television stations: WTTW/Chicago; WQED/Pittsburgh; KUED/Salt Lake City; KRMA/Denver; WCET/Cincinnati; and GPTV/Georgia Public Broadcasting. The station line-up will include improved time periods in top 30 markets and in total the newscasts will be broadcast on 46 of the 50 top markets. KCET is on track to maintaining the program's U.S. TV household coverage of nearly 90%.
