Smuin Ballet Celebrates Michael Smuin in 15th Anniversary Season
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ — Smuin Ballet, the sexy, vibrant and entertaining dance company with roots in classical ballet, begins its 15th season of making the art of dance accessible to enthusiastic audiences throughout the Bay Area. The company’s 2007/2008 season, the first following founder Michael Smuin’s sudden passing, began as a time of transition and ended as a season of joy, with the Company performing some of Michael’s most memorable pieces to standing room-only audiences.
“Rhythm of the Night”
Kicking off the 2008/2009 15th Anniversary Season, Smuin Ballet will host “Rhythm of the Night,” a sultry and sophisticated celebration on what would have been Michael Smuin’s 70th birthday. The celebration will take place on Monday, October 13 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Julia Morgan Ballroom of the Merchants Exchange Building in downtown San Francisco. Dancers will perform selections from the upcoming Fall/Winter Program, guests will be treated to salsa lessons and the tapas, sangria and Latin jazz will be flowing freely throughout the room. For more information about the party or the upcoming season, please call 415.495.2234 ext. 2.
The 15th Anniversary Season promises to be an even more exciting adventure with a year of premieres. In the upcoming Fall/Winter Program, debuting October 24 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Emmy Award-winning guest choreographer Robert Sund will be staging his Smuin Ballet premiere with Carmen, a sexy, jazzy interpretation of the classic story of romantic obsession, set to the music of Miles Davis.
Additionally, Smuin Ballet Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert will present Been through Diamonds, her eighth world premiere for the Company set to the music of Mozart. Seiwert has been recognized by the dance and entertainment worlds alike, named by Dance Magazine as one of the “top 25 to watch” in 2005 and highlighted by 7×7 Magazine in their “Hot 20 Under 40″ list. Rounding off the program, audiences will enjoy Michael Smuin’s Dances with Songs, the vibrant, iconic ballet that launched the Company.
Continuing the 2008/2009 Season, Smuin Ballet’s heartwarming The Christmas Ballet returns once again with special additions by guest choreographers Viktor Kabaniaev and Val Caniparoli. In the Spring Program, the Company will bring home Michael Smuin’s last narrative ballet St. Louis Woman for its Smuin Ballet premiere alongside a West Coast premiere of Trey McIntyre’s playful, coy The Naughty Boy! and Bouquet, Michael Smuin’s ode to romance.
