BIRMINGHAM pop legends Duran Duran have scooped the accolade for Greatest Video Of All Time.

The ground-breaking 1982 music video for Rio, which saw Simon Le Bon and pals frolicking on a yacht with a model, was voted the most legendary by MTV viewers.

It beat off competition from Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and Take On Me, by A-Ha.

New romantics Duran Duran were among the first bands to realise the potential of music videos to boost chart success and became pioneers of lavish, glamorous shoots for their songs.

The video was filmed at various spots across the island Antigua by director Russel Mulcahy, who went on to make movie Highlander.

Lead singer Simon Le Bon said: “We enjoy the process of making videos and Rio is still one of our favourites.

“We were all extremely honoured to hear that Rio had been named the Greatest Video Of All Time.

“It was shot on location at a time when very few artists had ventured out of the studio to film their videos. Russell Mulcahy did an amazing job and should share this with us.

“Our relationship with MTV has always been a very special one to us as we started out together and their support over the years was definitely instrumental in our success.”

The band, which started out performing at the Rum Runner club, in Broad Street, have been honoured with five of the music industry’s most prestigious awards since reforming in 2002.

These include Lifetime Achievement Awards from MTV, Q Magazine and Spanish Onda, along with the British Phonographic Industry’s Outstanding Contribution to Music Award and the coveted Ivor Novello Outstanding Contribution To British Music Award.
