A Welcome Cultural Addition

October 9, 2008

TO THE EDITOR:

It is happy news for lovers of good movies that Penn Cinema is committed to showing independent and foreign films. In past years, such films have been offered on the small screens of Midtown Cinemas in Harrisburg and at the rustic Point of View Theater in Millersville. The Allen Theater in Annville periodically offers a few great non-Hollywood movies. Now, Penn Cinema is attempting to bring in one foreign or independent film a week.

Penn Cinema offers state-of-the-art projection, sound and seating. Recently, the amazing documentary “Man on Wire” was shown. The problem: fewer than 10 people on average attended any showing. (A number of those were students from the “Philosophy in Film” course I teach at Millersville University.) If that continues to be the turnout for these movies the initiative will be dropped. Let us not allow this opportunity to pass us by.

Contact Penn Cinema and express your support for their effort to show foreign and independent films. Find out what films will be shown. Innumerable times I have had to travel to Philadelphia’s Ritz Theaters to see movies that never show up in Lancaster County. Here’s a chance to bring some extra culture to our area.
