6.1 Quake Hits British Virgin Islands

A strong, magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the British Virgin Islands Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

No immediate information was available about possible damage from the 6:40 a.m. quake, centered about 51 miles northwest of The Settlement on Anegad, a sparsely populated northern atoll of the British Virgin Islands, the quake-monitoring agency said.

The USGS placed the depth of the quake at 16 miles.
