Here Come the Vivian Girls
By Sonia Zhuravlyova
Vivian Girls are the latest enfants terribles to emerge out of the lofts of Brooklyn, New York City. Taking their name from the heroines of cult outsider artist Henry Darger’s work, this lo-fi all- girl rock trio specialise in seductively sweet harmonies, woven with simple guitar rhythms.
Their music might be uncomplicated – and it certainly breaks no new ground – but hooky, charming pop gems like “Tell the World” are pretty hard to resist. And if you’re feeling nostalgic for mid- Eighties noise-poppers like Jesus and Mary Chain and the Shop Assistants, then these gals are for you. The band have just re- released their eponymous album and they will be warming up our shores when they come over to tour just before Christmas.

“The Girls are a three-girl band with candy-sweet vocals and great bangs. They perfectly marry their biggest influences, Wall of Sound and shoegaze.”

“Vivian Girls craft a ghostly, melancholy pop sound that feels at home amid the current crop of younger acts taking cues from the noisier no wave of 1970s New York.”

“Their melodies are simple but pleasing. They crank the reverb all the way and let their melodic dissonance fill the air. Perhaps a bit on the bratty side though.”

“Though far from perfect, their songs flit by in an instant, all washes of trebly guitars and nervous vocals that leave enough heartwarming traces to warrant subsequent returns.”

“When I first heard them play, it sounded like a breath of fresh air, like a reminder of all those great obscure indie-pop groups from the Eighties that I missed out on because I was too young.”
