Hilario Durn Trio Brings Bright Jazz Sounds to Town
Cuba-born pianist Hilario Durn and members of his ensemble will perform their bold jazz sounds Thursday at Stephens College for the Dr. Carlos Perez-Mesa Memorial Concert.
Durn, a Toronto composer, bandleader and arranger, is making his first “We Always Swing” Jazz Series appearance with his trio that includes Roberto Occhipinti on bass and Mark Kelso on drums.
Durn has gained a world following, taking his music to major international jazz festivals and sharing stages with such jazz legends as the late Dizzy Gillespie and Michael Legrand.
A prodigious music maker, Durn’s albums include “From the Heart” in 2006, “Encuentro en La Habana” in 2005 and “Killer Tumbao” in 1997. And he has been nominated for Juno Awards in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007. He won in 2005 for “New Danzon.”
