The Broadway production of the musical “Hairspray” is scheduled to end its six-year run early next year, its producers announced.

Playbill.com said the show’s original Tony Award-winning star Harvey Fierstein will reprise his role of Edna Turnblad starting Nov. 11. Fierstein is scheduled to stay with the musical until it closes its doors Jan. 4, the theater publication said.

The show based on John Waters’ 1988 film will have played 2,641 performances and 31 previews at the Neil Simon Theatre by the time it wraps up. It opened on Broadway Aug. 15, 2002.

A big-screen version of the stage musical was a hit last year.
