PRSA Silicon Valley Goes Inside the Newsroom

November 5, 2008

PRSA Silicon Valley and NBC Bay Area will host a special inside-the-newsroom tour and workshop for public relations and communications professionals at the station’s San Jose studios on November 7.

Attendees will hear from NBC personalities Scott Budman, Brent Cannon and Laura Garcia-Cannon and get an insider’s look at a day in the life of television news anchors, reporters, editors and producers. They will learn how news is gathered and produced, and how to write for broadcast.

Budman has been an anchor and reporter for business and technology news with NBC Bay Area since 1995 and is the co-founder of Tech Now!, currently in its fifth season. Brent Cannon and Laura Garcia-Cannon are co-anchors of the morning news. Additional speakers include Kirsten Chiala, executive producer; Sabrina Hughes, assignment desk; and others including from the technical or camera crew.

“This is a rare opportunity for our members and other PR professional to gain valuable insight on the day-to-day workings of the broadcast media,” said Paula Dunne, chair of PRSA Silicon Valley’s Professional Development Committee and immediate past president.

Public relations practitioners will learn how the news is gathered, written and produced, including tips from producers and assignment editors on how to write effective pitches for television, what’s broadcast worthy and how to optimize TV opportunities for their company or clients.

The tour and workshop will be held 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the NBC Bay Area studios, 2450 North First Street, San Jose. PRSA Silicon Valley is sponsored by Cision, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Marketwire, Trainer Communications and Weber Shandwick.

Attendees are asked to bring a news or “evergreen” pitch that they may get real-time feedback in order to hone it for actual possible production.
