'Sharing Miracles' Television Program to Feature Super Bowl-Winning Running Back Jerome Bettis
Posted on: Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 09:16 CST
Bettis -- known in the sports world as "The Bus" -- was 14 years old when he was first diagnosed with asthma. In this month's episode, he says: "Initially I thought that with asthma, I couldn't be involved in any sports or other activities. Thankfully, my mother encouraged me, instead of discouraged me, to play. She said, 'As long as you take your medicine, the doctor told me that you will be fine.' But, as I got older, I had to take serious steps to control my asthma."
In 1997, while playing with the Steelers, he had a severe asthma attack during a nationally televised game. "Up until I had that asthma attack, I always felt that asthma was a situation that I would deal with it as needed," he says. However, that frightening incident altered his view of the disease: "I realized that I was in a life-threatening situation, and I needed to do everything I could do, in my power, to understand what I was dealing with and what I was stricken with. At that point, my life changed."
For the rest of his career, he says, he made a stronger effort to "manage and monitor myself to make sure that I was in the right condition in order to be able to play."
The tenacity that he displayed on the field and in dealing with his condition paid off, and in 2005 - his final season in the NFL - he helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Now, he works hard as a patient advocate, helping to assure children with asthma that they, too, can pursue their dreams. "I tell kids with asthma to not let their situation become a liability. Understand what you have. Learn how to manage it and learn how to deal with it on a daily basis and you can be successful. If I was able to overcome this, then you can overcome it."
Also helping asthma patients overcome their illness are scientists at America's pharmaceutical research companies. According to a recent survey, 77 potential new medicines are in development for lung and respiratory disorders, including asthma.
Also featured on the episode is GlaxoSmithKline scientist and asthma expert Dr.
He adds: "Even though we may or may not be able to cure it in the near or relatively near future, it hopefully will allow us to better manage the disease so that patients can live a more fulfilling life in terms of their overall health status and sense of well-being."
