MICHIGAN QUALITY COUNCIL (MQC) NAMES The Detroit Athletic Club 2008 STATE QUALITY AWARD RECIPIENT

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 12:26 CST

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Quality Council (MQC) announces that the Detroit Athletic Club is a 2008 Quality Leadership Award recipient.

The Michigan Quality Leadership Award is the highest honor for organizational performance excellence in the state. It is awarded after a rigorous review by a team of examiners who perform a comprehensive site visit and then submit a report for final evaluation to an independent panel of judges.

The MQC's Leadership award program is modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award program. Both programs evaluate an organization for excellence in seven categories of performance: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; staff focus; process management; and organizational results. Participating organizations receive a feedback report identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement; those who demonstrate mature processes and outstanding results may become award recipients.

"The Detroit Athletic Club has implemented a Performance Excellence Process as its framework for organizational improvement. It has developed a high-performance culture and an environment where the motivated workforce can create a premier experience for its members," said Geri Markley, executive director of the Michigan Quality Council. "The DAC is a role model for other organizations in Michigan and for small businesses and other clubs."

"The membership and staff of the DAC are honored and delighted to accept the prestigious Michigan Quality Council Leadership Award. It is a fulfillment of our vision to be recognized as the premier private gathering place in Michigan," said J.G. Ted Gillary, executive manager, Detroit Athletic Club. "We hope it also shines a positive light on Detroit. Hospitality and excellence are great values to move the city forward."

The Detroit Athletic Club is one of the finest private clubs in America. It is recognized as a Platinum Club of America, a Top Place to Work by the Detroit Free Press and is a nine-time recipient of the annual 101 Best and Brightest Companies To Work For Award. Founded in 1887, the DAC evolved from a brotherhood of athletes and prominent industrialists. Today the club's membership is made up of important local, regional and national leaders.

The MQC was created in 1993 by business and government leaders to promote performance excellence practices that achieve results in business, education, healthcare, and non-profit organizations throughout Michigan. The primary service of the Council is to provide feedback to organizations, culminating in recognizing top Michigan performers. The MQC is now affiliated with Cleary University.

The MQC can be found on the World Wide Web at www.michiganquality.org. For more information, contact 734-929-9124 or mquality@cleary.edu.
