Chicago Tribune Foundation Awards $117,000 in Journalism and Civic Grants

CHICAGO, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago Tribune Foundation announced that its board of directors approved $117,000 in civic and journalism grants on November 26. The journalism grants support diversity through internships for hands-on journalism experience for young journalists or professional development for established journalists.

"We are proud to support these organizations that work to expand the training of journalists and to continue our support of diverse voices in the newsroom," said Janet Dobbs, director of communications and community relations for Chicago Tribune Media Group and Foundation board member.

Grants totaling $87,000 were approved for the following journalism organizations:

-- American Society of Newspaper Editors Foundation -- Asian American Journalists Association -- Columbia College -- Community Renewal Society -- Illinois First Amendment Center -- International Women's Media Foundation -- Link Media, Inc. -- National Association of Black Journalists -- National Association of Hispanic Journalists -- National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association -- Native American Journalists Association -- Northwestern University -- University of Rhode Island Foundation (Metcalf) -- University System of Maryland Foundation (Journalism Center on Children & Families)

The board also approved two grants in the civic area totaling $30,000. The City-Wide Tax Assistance Program (TAP) offers a financial literacy program at Chicago Public Schools to help high school students apply for grants for college or vocational education. The Chicago Community Trust has built an endowment fund, Nuestro Futuro (Our Future) to help Latino nonprofits in the Chicagoland area.
