Syntagma Square was filled with the melodies of the City of Athens
Philharmonic Orchestra and songs of the Children’s Choir, until the moment
Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis gave the signal for the lighting of the
Christmas tree and illumination of the city with festive lights and stated,
“this is a time of goodwill and celebration, I invite you all to make this
year’s Christmas one to remember.” Fireworks lit up Athens skies, making the
start of the celebration, as the City of Athens has planned a series of
exciting Christmas and New Year’s events.

Christmas in Athens is filled, this year, with central squares lit in all
their glory, with joyous carollers, sweet-smelling aromas and good wishes
from all its warm-hearted citizens and shopkeepers alike. Music, lights and
lots of activities provide the setting for the Christmas celebrations in our
city. Window displays are dressed in their best and the rich traditions of
Greek culture are apparent everywhere. Visitors choosing to come to Athens
during the holidays can take advantage of their time to visit the city’s many
archaeological and contemporary museums, art galleries, new gastronomic
arrivals and chic and trendy bars. Arts and culture abound, complete with
exhibits, lyrical and dramatic performances and shopping at its finest.
