Texas Employment Report: Employee Confidence Index Rises 2.4 Points

DALLAS, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite a slight uptick in the state unemployment rate, the Texas Employee Confidence Index increased 2.4 points to 49.4 in November, according to the latest Spherion(R) Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, shows that fewer workers believe the economy is getting weaker and more workers are confident in the future of their current employers and in their ability to find a new job. In addition, 41 percent of Texas workers plan on looking for a new job in the next year.

Results from the Texas Employment Report:

• The majority of workers (54 percent) are confident in their ability to find a new job, increasing five percentage points from the previous month.
• Sixty-seven percent of workers are confident in the future of their current employer versus 63 percent in October.
• More workers are likely to look for a new job in the next 12 months, with 41 percent reporting that they are likely to do so, compared to 30 percent in October.

"Texas, in general, remains in a much better position than the rest of the country," said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. "While the majority of states are contracting in terms of job growth, Texas continues to report positive job creation, particularly in the government and education and health services sectors. Although hiring decisions have slowed, I anticipate that the state will continue to feel the impact of the current economic situation on a much more mild level. I am optimistic that Texas will continue to go against the grain in 2009."
