ATU International President Congratulates LaHood, Solis on Nominations

December 19, 2008
Repost This

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following is a statement by ATU International President Warren S. George:

On behalf of the Amalgamated Transit Union, I want to congratulate Representatives Ray LaHood and Hilda Solis on their nominations for Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Labor, respectively.

The ATU has had a good working relationship with Representative LaHood on transit labor issues. Most recently, during negotiations of SAFETEA-LU, the multi-year surface transportation funding authorization legislation, Representative LaHood was one of 30 Republicans to sign onto a letter supporting the preservation of the longstanding collective bargaining and job rights of transit workers set forth under 49 USC 5333(b), formerly Section 13(c) of the Federal Transit Act.

I look forward to working with Representative LaHood in the coming years as we seek to reauthorize SAFETEA-LU and provide much needed investment in our nation’s infrastructure and transit systems.

The ATU is also proud to be a friend of Representative Solis, who is eminently qualified to serve as Labor Secretary. Without question, Representative Solis has been an ardent supporter of Labor and transit. In her years in the House of Representatives, she has worked to protect the rights and interests of America’s workers and to secure a better life for their families.

I have no doubt that, as Labor Secretary, Representative Solis will continue to be a tireless supporter of working men and women throughout America. It is comforting to know that she will be in our corner fighting for the issues and policies that matter to our members.
