Newswomen's Club of New York Announces 70th Annual Front Page Awards

Historic Organization to Honor Women Journalists for Outstanding Achievement

NEW YORK, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Newswomen's Club of New York, an organization steeped in the historic movement of women in journalism since 1922, announces the opening of entries for the 70th Annual Front Page Awards. This prestigious award honors the exemplary work of women journalists in newspapers; wire services; magazines; radio and television; internet; and visual arts and photojournalism. This year, award recipients will receive honors at the Front Page Awards ceremony on June 25, 2009, at the National Arts Club in New York City.

Competition Entry Details

• Deadline for entries is March 1, 2009
• Articles, Segments and Visual entries must have been published between August 2007 and December 2008
• Entries must be in English or translated to English for the purposes of the competition
• Applicants can apply from across the nation, not only New York
• Applicants can submit more than one entry in different categories

Since 1938, the Newswomen's Club of New York has spotlighted the exceptional work by women in all fields of journalism, modernizing as time progresses, and adding new categories as the ever-growing and rapidly changing world of journalism expands. This year is no exception, as entries can now come from blogs -- the Internet's newest form of journalism. Also, this year, the organization has decided to remove blind entries in all categories and has added cover design to the visual arts category.

All entries will be reviewed by panels of judges from across the country, selected for their impressive credentials and contributions to the industry, including editors, reporters and educators in the fields of journalism, communications and literature.

"With each year that passes, the entries to the Front Page Awards continue to grow in both scope and caliber," said Jeanne King, Newswomen's Club of New York president. "The prestige of these awards is based not only on the excellence of the work, but the aptitude of the judges who are selected nationwide for their own recognized achievements."

The organization is also committed to the achievements of future newswomen through the Anne O'Hare McCormick Scholarship Fund, which benefits aspiring women journalists attending Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. The contest helps the Scholarship Fund, named in memory of Anne O'Hare McCormick, former Newswomen's Club of New York vice president and first woman on the editorial board of the New York Times.
