Norwegian Web site yanks Beatles podcasts
Norwegian national broadcaster NRK has removed a series of Internet podcasts that made it possible to download Beatles songs for free, Billboard.com said.
NRK announced earlier this week plans to re-air throughout the month its 2007 radio series
Our Daily Beatles online as 212 free podcasts, which explain the back stories of each Beatles song, then play the actual tune. Fourteen podcasts were posted online, but have since been taken off the NRK Web site after it was determined they weren't eligible to air under NRK's agreement with IFPI, Billboard.com said.
IFPI describes itself on its Web site as being an organization that
represents the recording industry worldwide, with a membership comprising some 1,400 record companies in 72 countries and affiliated industry associations in 44 countries. IFPI's mission is to promote the value of recorded music, safeguard the rights of record producers and expand the commercial uses of recorded music in all markets where its members operate.
The Beatles comes under our agreement with IFPI, which says that we only can put up shows for download that were aired the latest four weeks, and where the music is less than 70 percent of the show's length, NRK said in a statement.
'Our Daily Beatles' aired in 2007, so we have to pull the podcast.
