DGA best doc nominees full of first-timers

The Directors Guild of America says nearly all of the films nominated for the U.S. group's best documentary award involve first-time nominees.

The Hollywood Reporter said Friday the nominees for the guild's best documentary award for 2008 include Waltz with Bashir, The Judge and the General At the Death House Door, Man on Wire and Stranded: I've Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains.

Death co-creators Peter Gilbert and Stevie James are the only individuals involved with the nominated documentaries that have previous DGA nods on their resumes.

James won the guild's best documentary award for 1994's Hoop Dreams while Gilbert was nominated in the same category for 1998's Vietnam: Long Time Coming and for children's programming for 2003's A Time for Dancing."

The annual awards show will be held Jan. 31 at Los Angeles' Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel, the Reporter said.
