taggle Aims to Revive Retail by Letting Customers Name their Price for Goods

Posted on: Monday, 12 January 2009, 07:40 CST

NEW YORK, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Amid the current deep slump in retail sales, the team behind taggle believes they have an answer to getting shoppers back into stores: let customers name the price they're willing to pay for goods.

taggle is an in-store wireless pricing and advertising system which has been in development for over a year. Retailers control which items are available on taggle promotion, setting price ranges, quantities, and duration. Customers in the store then browse for and make offers on merchandise via their iPhone or iPod Touch. Users of other phones aren't left out of the fun -- they can participate via text messaging. Customers get an immediate response and if their offer is accepted they pay for the item at regular checkout.

"taggle combines the success of online bidding with the convenience and immediacy of shopping in a retail store," says Michael Brophy, Vice President of Product Strategy for Sysgain Inc., the firm which developed taggle. He goes on to say, "Reviving retail sales starts with getting folks back in the stores. taggle's attraction is that it offers a hassle-free way to bargain shop."

Initial indications are that industry experts are listening. In September 2008, taggle was chosen as one of 15 finalists worldwide to compete for the Consumer Electronics Association's first annual i-stage competition, which highlighted the most innovative new products of the year.

taggle is showing off their technology, currently in private beta, at the National Retail Federation's 98th Annual trade show in New York City on January 12-13, 2009.

Says Ram Thummala, CEO, "Our objective at NRF 2009 is to show retailers the excitement taggle can generate with shoppers. We intend to pilot with several retailers in the first half of 2009 so customers can experience taggle for themselves."
