Top Analyst Firm Places Spring Wireless in the Leaders Quadrant for Its 2008 Mobile Enterprise Application Platform Magic Quadrant

Posted on: Monday, 12 January 2009, 09:30 CST

SEATTLE, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Spring Wireless, the global leader in mobile software and services today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Leaders Quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms report, published Dec. 19, 2008, and authored by William Clark and Michael King.

In addition to providing a mobile platform, according to Gartner Inc., leaders must not only be good at supporting their own platforms, but they also must have a good vision of the multichannel enterprise, a solid understanding of IT requirements, and scalable channels and partnerships to market. They also have to provide platforms that are easy to purchase, program, deploy and upgrade. Smaller vendors that have focused on key elements of multichannel functionality and offer application-centric solutions compete head-to-head with broad platforms, but some are side-stepping this to be pluggable. With the revised criteria, the MEAP vendors offering applications may not have all the flexibility but can provide enough product substance in terms of nonfunctional requirements (for example, device management, transport stacks, security and policy enforcement) to be included in the Leaders Quadrant.

"We believe being placed in the Leaders Quadrant by Gartner is important third-party recognition of our approach and business model. With more than 240,000 users worldwide in more than 220 Fortune 2000 customers and an annual growth rate of more than 100 percent since its inception in 2001, Spring Wireless has one of the largest install bases in the industry and significantly faster growth than competitors," said Marcelo Conde, Chief Executive Officer of Spring Wireless. "Spring Wireless offers the only complete mobile solution that combines powerful platform technologies with applications and services, acting as the single point of contact for all of our customers' mobile needs. Our customers report reduced time to deployment and lower cost of ownership over other solutions. We're thrilled to be recognized for what we consider to be our groundbreaking work and included in the Magic Quadrant Leaders category."

In the report, Gartner renamed the "multichannel access gateway" category to the "mobile enterprise application platform" category, reflecting the market's maturation and the move of mobile tools and platforms to the application development mainstream. More stringent requirements have narrowed the number of companies that were eligible for inclusion in this year's report. Vendors were evaluated against such critical capabilities as: IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and tooling; multichannel development and debugging (client and server); management and security; enterprise application integration (tools and libraries); device integration and peripheral support; application client runtime; device/operating system support; packaged mobile applications; hosting; architectural flexibility.

Gartner estimates the overall size of the mobile enterprise application platform and packaged mobile application platform market was between $625 million and $750 million in 2007 and that it grew at a rate of about 20 percent since 2007. Gartner projects the market will top $1 billion by 2010.

Spring Wireless offers an extensive inventory of pre-built applications for business-to-employee transactions and business-to-consumer transactions for financial services and government organizations that offer an intuitive user interface design. Spring Wireless also connects employees to existing backend systems (ERP, CRM, WMS, SCM etc.) via web-services or application integration and its solutions can be delivered to more than 180 devices supported across multiple operating systems. Additionally, Spring Wireless has the capability to purchase, manage and deploy mobile devices and wireless communication services on behalf of its customers.
