Lane Hudson hired to direct Integrated Media Strategies

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ — Brunswick Group LLC, a leading strategic communications consultancy, today announced that David Sutphen, former Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Viacom — the parent company of MTV Networks, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures — and former senior staff member in Congress, has joined the firm’s Washington, DC, office as Partner. Also today, Brunswick announced that Lane Hudson, new media specialist and former political advisor, has joined the firm as Director of Integrated Media.

“David has been at the center of significant policy, public affairs and media issues for more than a decade. He understands the intersection of these worlds, and how to educate, influence and deliver results,” said Hilary Rosen, Managing Partner of Brunswick’s Washington office. “In the new Washington, businesses, trade associations and issue advocates will have to engage stakeholders — opinion leaders, media outlets and constituency groups — in new and creative ways. David will lead our team’s work in Washington on public-private partnerships. He has been at the forefront of helping companies navigate their corporate and social responsibilities, and in pairing their efforts with good public policy that earns the respect of elected officials.”

“Lane has pioneered the use of new media strategies to help clients affect policy change. He will add an important voice and perspective to our team of experienced advisors who know and understand this new environment in Washington,” said Rosen.

“Actions in Washington will significantly and directly impact the interests of corporate America. David and Lane will be critical assets for companies wishing to understand the policy landscape, shape outcomes and improve their positioning in Washington,” said Steve Lipin, Senior U.S. Partner.

Before joining Viacom, David was the Senior Vice President of Government and Industry Relations for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the trade association representing the major record labels. At RIAA, David was responsible for advocating on behalf of the music industry before Congress and various regulatory agencies. David joined the RIAA after a six year stint on Capitol Hill, including nearly four years as General Counsel to Senator Edward Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and two years as Chief of Staff to former Congressman Harold Ford. David worked as an associate in the communications practice group at Covington & Burling in Washington, DC, and clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit before working in politics. He graduated Cum Laude from Amherst College in 1991 with a B.A. in Political Science. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1995, where he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Law Review.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Reproductive Rights as well as LAYC, a community-based organization that provides over 4,000 multicultural, at-risk youth with comprehensive educational, work-related, advocacy and residential services.

Lane has an extensive background in politics, policy and communications, especially in the increasingly influential new media arena. Before joining Brunswick, Lane ran his own company offering strategic communications strategy to corporate and non-profit clients. He has also worked for former U.S. Senator Fritz Hollings (D-SC) and as an advisor to former South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges (D).

For his political blogging in 2006, Lane was profiled as a Time Magazine Person of the Year representing the power of average citizens in the Information Age. He was also named Advocate Person of the Year and a member of Out Magazine’s “Out 100″ list of influential gay Americans. He remains a contributor to Advocate.com, Huffington Post, and other major online sites. Major print outlets have covered his commentary and work. He has appeared on major national television and radio networks, including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC, National Public Radio, and CNN Radio. Lane also regularly serves on panels domestically and internationally discussing American politics and new media.
