SC Johnson Again a Best Place to Work in America

RACINE, Wis., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- For the seventh year in a row, SC Johnson has been recognized as a 100 Best company on FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" in America. SC Johnson appears at number 81 on this year's list, and it is the company's ninth recognition by FORTUNE since the list debuted in 1998.

FORTUNE specifically credited SC Johnson for their extended annual holiday break, competitive salaries, and having the lowest turnover. Also noted was the company's world-class fitness center, job sharing and telecommuting opportunities. SC Johnson is one of four Wisconsin companies on the list.

"What makes this recognition so special is that it's based on the opinions of the people who work here," said SC Johnson Chairman and CEO Fisk Johnson. The recognition also supports a key SC Johnson objective -- that when you reach for an SC Johnson product you can feel good about it. "At the same time we're making trusted products, we're also doing what's right for the environment, our communities and the people who work here," said Fisk. "In today's troubling economic times, it's important to us that as a company we're about more than just profits. We believe responsibility and success can and should go hand-in hand."

Among its nine recognitions by FORTUNE magazine, the company has been named one of the Top Ten companies three times. SC Johnson also has received recognition from other organizations. Last September, AARP recognized SC Johnson for the third consecutive year as a top company for U.S. for workers over 50. Additionally, in 2008 SC Johnson made its 20th appearance on the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers," according to Working Mother magazine.

Creating a Unique Culture

Here are a few examples of how SC Johnson supports its unique company culture:

-- Assistance for families -- In 2007, SC Johnson expanded its Childcare Learning Center, adding 9,600 square feet to ensure that employees' children will not have to be placed on a waiting list to enter the Center. Today the center is a 45,000-square-food facility that provides full-time, part-time and drop-in supervision on all three shifts, as well as education and summer camp programs.

-- Learning opportunities -- for more than 10 years, SC Johnson has partnered with a local technical college to provide on-site courses to employees at its largest global manufacturing site, in Racine, Wisconsin. The initiative has offered 800 classes to date with more than 4,500 enrollments, and has enabled employees to complete associates' degrees, technical diplomas and other certifications.

-- Environmental leadership -- By powering its largest U.S. factory with Green-e certified cogeneration and using wind power for a portion of the electricity of another U.S. plant, SC Johnson gives employees an environmental legacy to be proud of. FORTUNE and the Great Place to Work(R) institute compile their 100 Best list based on an extensive questionnaire, an employee survey and a written portion including stories from employees explaining what makes their company a best place to work. The Great Place to Work(R) Institute surveyed employees from more than 353 candidate companies.

"The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for FORTUNE by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. A large part of the total score comes from employee responses to a 57-question survey which goes to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. More than 81,000 employees participated in the survey this year, making it the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. It asks about things such as attitudes towards management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within the organization. The rest of the score is based on the company's responses to the Great Place to Work Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communications, training, recognition programs diversity efforts and workplace culture.
