Poll: Fans surprised Oscar ignored Clint

Thirty-four percent of the participants in an online poll said Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood was the worst-snubbed when Oscar nominations were announced.

Eastwood directed Changeling, and helmed and starred in Gran Torino last year, but neither film earned the veteran filmmaker an acting or directing Oscar nomination Thursday. The movies were also left off the shortlist for best picture.

Asked to name Oscar’s biggest snub, 34 percent of the 2,994 people who took part in the Moviefone.com/PopEater.com poll said it was the omission of Eastwood’s name from the list of nominees. Another 28 percent said it was Leonard DiCaprio not getting a nod for his work in Revolutionary Road, 27 percent said it was The Dark Knight failing to earn nominations for best picture or best director, and 7 percent said it was Kate Winslet snagging only one nomination instead of two.

Winslet won Golden Globes this month for her performances in both Revolutionary Road and The Reader, but was nominated for an Oscar only for her role in The Reader.

Thirty-five percent of poll participants said Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscar nomination for his work in Tropic Thunder was the biggest surprise when names were read, while 26 said they were shocked to hear The Reader was nominated for best picture and 13 percent said Michael Shannon’s nomination for Revolutionary Road took them by surprise.

Half of the people polled said they were sort of happy with the Oscar nominations, 27 percent said not at all and 23 percent said they were pleased with the announcements.
