Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun to Host Volunteer Service Project for NBA All-Star Weekend

PHOENIX, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun, will be hosting nearly 200 NBA volunteers during the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service on February 13, 2009. Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun is part of Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading non-profit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods.

The NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service will include NBA All-Stars and other volunteers, who will help revitalize the Central City South neighborhood in Phoenix. Volunteers will focus on painting and revitalizing five homes on a two-block stretch along Pima Street between 16th and 19th Avenues.

For homeowner Ella Scott, 67, the project means a new heating and cooling system, a remodeled bathroom and a few new appliances. Ms. Scott currently does not have a working washer and dryer, leaving her to clean her clothes in the bathtub.

“We are delighted to have the NBA family join the ranks of thousands of Rebuilding Together volunteers and partners who work with our national Affiliate Network of more than 200 affiliates to help low-income homeowners stay in safe, healthy and affordable housing,” said Gary A. Officer, CEO of Rebuilding Together, Inc. “Rebuilding Together expects to rehabilitate as many as 10,000 homes in 2009 and it is partnerships with giants such as the NBA that bring our work to life.”

In 2008, Rebuilding Together and the NBA teamed up for NBA Cares and repaired homes in New Orleans. Hundreds of volunteers dedicated the day to helping repair the Holy Cross neighborhood and had help from some friends at the NBA including Chris Bosh, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki and LeBron James.

Rebuilding Together provides no-cost home modifications, rehabilitation services to low-income homeowners nationwide through the work of legions of community volunteers and national partnerships with philanthropic businesses and organizations.
