NBA Referees to Team Up with NBA, TNT, and GEICO During All-Star Weekend

February 12, 2009

PHOENIX, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ — On February 14 the National Basketball Referees Foundation (NBRF) — the charitable organization of the National Basketball Referees Association — will team up with the NBA, TNT, and GEICO during the first ever NBA HORSE game to give four kids from the I.G. Homes Boys and Girls Club of Phoenix an unforgettable experience.

The children will have the opportunity to meet the contestants and witness the action during the contest. Prior to the HORSE event, the NBRF will make a check presentation to the Homes Boys and Girls Club. NBA referee Mark Wunderlich, who is officiating the HORSE game, will also donate his stipend for the event to the Boys and Girls Club.

“We have a tradition of helping inner-city youth in cities where referees work,” said Lamell McMorris, spokesman for the NBA referees. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the NBA, TNT and GEICO to give these kids a special opportunity. It is definitely something they won’t soon forget.”

At previous All-Star Weekends, the NBA referees have visited children’s hospitals, held instructional mini-clinics, and given lectures to children on alternate careers in sports.
