Posted on: Tuesday, 17 February 2009, 10:00 CST

Nine bold predictions for 2009 are sprinkled into trading card company's latest baseball release!

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Last year proved to be one for the record books with Barack Obama's decisive election as U.S. President and Sarah Palin's thunderous arrival on the political scene. To celebrate some of the incredible moments from 2008, Upper Deck has inserted 10 memorable "Historic Firsts" commemorative cards inside its recently launched 2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball card set. And now Upper Deck is taking the "historical firsts" theme one step further by casting their own predictions for possible eye-opening moments in 2009 with a special nine-card insert set called "Historic Firsts Predictors." The cards, which are also scattered inside Upper Deck Series One Baseball, feature some bold predictions by the sports card leader, and will no doubt fuel conversations and contemplation by collectors.

Topping the list of historic predictions for 2009 are cards predicting that an AIDS vaccine will be developed, Bigfoot will be found, life will be discovered on another planet and gas prices will drop to 99 cents per gallon!

"Nobody could have guessed how 2008 was going to turn out, so we thought we'd have some fun and provide some thought-provoking predictions for 2009," said Kerri Stockholm, Upper Deck's director of Sports Marketing. "With the onslaught of news stories focused on the troubled economy, Upper Deck wanted to offer some good-natured hope and humor for collectors and fans. Who knows? Some of these predictions may very well come true."

The "Historical Firsts Predictors" cards, inserted at a rate of 1:6 packs in Upper Deck's 2009 Series One Baseball release, is hitting store shelves this week. Other noteworthy predictions in the series include that the Dow Jones will reach 15,000, and the first African-American woman will be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.

Getting back to its roots, Upper Deck also included a few sports-related predictions. The scenario most likely to come true is that the National League -- following a 10-year drought -- will actually win this year's MLB All-Star Game, which is being played at St. Louis's Busch Stadium on July 15. The two remaining sports predictions include Chicago being named host city of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and college football adopting an actual playoff system to determine the national champion.

If any of the predictions come true, Upper Deck will announce details surrounding a very special promotion to celebrate the noteworthy event.
