Serbian allegedly confessed to Dando death
A Serbian national allegedly confessed in public that he killed British TV host Jill Dando in 1999, police say.
The Sunday Times of London reported detectives are investigating allegations an unidentified Serbian national claimed at a bar in Belgrade, Serbia, in September 2001 that he killed the BBC celebrity in retribution for a 1999 NATO bombing of the city.
The man, thought to be a professional killer, reportedly was applauded after announcing his deadly actions to more than 10 people in the bar, police said.
Dando, known for TV series such as Crimewatch
and Holiday,
was fatally shot once in the head in April 1999.
The allegations of a public confession by the Serbian national come years after Barry George was convicted of murdering Dando. George received a life prison sentence in 2001.
Commander Simon Foy, head of the Metropolitan Police’s homicide division, confirmed to The Times this weekend that detectives began investigating the new leads in the case.
