Amnesty International Welcomes Candid U.S. State Department Report on Human Rights in China

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- T. Kumar, Amnesty International USA advocacy director for Asia and the Pacific, made the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of State's findings on China in its annual report on human rights around the world:

"Amnesty International applauds the U.S. State Department's candid review of the worsening human rights situation in China, a concern the organization has brought to light on numerous occasions.

"The U.S. government's own evidence points to dire circumstances for the Chinese people that can no longer be ignored, even as the United States works with China on other pressing issues.

"These facts must catalyze the Obama administration to quickly incorporate these findings into their formulation of foreign policy toward the country -- a foreign policy that not only acknowledges and denounces, but also takes concrete steps to effectively address the unacceptable state of human rights in its bilateral and multilateral forums with China."
