Coalition for a Democratic Workplace: Big Labor Ignores Worker Rights ... Again

Posted on: Thursday, 26 February 2009, 09:33 CST

Obama Voters, Union households want secret ballots, labor bosses say no

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While Congressional allies of Big Labor meet to discuss the deceptively named Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that denies millions of workers their right to a secret ballot in union-organizing elections, small businesses across the country stand in strong opposition to the job-killing measure. They are not alone.

Recent polling by the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace found that:

  • 74% of voters, 74% of union households and 73% of Obama voters oppose the Employee Free Choice Act.
  • 86% of voters, 88% of union households and 86% of Obama voters feel the process should remain private and only 8% feel it should be public information.
  • 82% of voters, 85% of union households and 81% of Obama voters favor having a federally supervised election as a means to "protect the individual rights of workers."
  • The majority (52% to 26%) of American voters and the plurality (48%) of union households believe that the Employee Free Choice Act is not good for job creation.
  • 71% of voters, 72% of union households and 68% of Obama voters believe the binding interest arbitration provision would be "unwise" and "risky." In today's economic climate, the electorate has little confidence in the federal government's ability to make such major business decisions.

"The message from could not be any clearer. Small businesses, Obama voters, Democrats, Republicans, Independents and union households say vote no on this anti-worker, job-killing bill," said Brian Worth with the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace.

Small business and their workers face the greatest threat. Not only will small business employees effectively lose their right to a secret ballot, this undemocratic legislation will bind employers to contracts that inhibit their ability to create much-needed new jobs.

"As labor bosses promote creative economic theories, small businesses and workers face the real threat of what's actually in the anti-worker Employee Free Choice Act," said Brian Worth with the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace.
