Judges of the 34th annual Cesar Awards in Paris say Seraphine was the best French movie of 2008.

The Hollywood Reporter said the film from director Martin Provost earned the top award at Friday night's awards ceremony along with wins in six other categories.

The movie, based on the life of French painter Seraphine de Senlis, was also honored for best original screenplay, costumes, sound, photography and decor. Actress Yolande Moreau was also honored with a best actress award for her portrayal of de Senlis.

The Chatelet theater awards event also featured a best actor win for Vincent Cassel for his role in director Jean-Francois Richet's Mesrine. The two-part movie about noted French gangster Jacques Mesrine also resulted in a best director Cesar for Richet.

The Reporter said I've Loved You So Long actress Elsa Zylberstein earned a best supporting actress award Friday, while Jean-Paul Roussillon of A Christmas Tale topped the best supporting actor category.
