TOMA LECHE Offers Free Salsa Workouts & MILK in National City Health Fair

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- On March 7, throngs of San Diegans will get in touch with their Latin side. Sashaying to the rhythm of salsa music, every "1, 2, 3" step could lead to better health. Dancing after all is a form of exercise that gets the heart racing and the body moving - crucial to helping curb health problems like diabetes and obesity that plague many families, especially Hispanics today. With more than 13 million Latinos living in California(1), health experts are becoming increasingly aware of the complications related to obesity and diabetes in this community. Statistics show that nearly three in four Mexican-Americans(2), the largest Hispanic group in the United States, are overweight or obese and about 2.5 million U.S. Hispanics have diabetes(3). To fight these alarming trends and to promote healthy living, GOT MILK? will join other non-profit agencies in offering free health services and education to Latinos at the American Diabetes Association Feria de la Salud on Mar. 7 at Kimball Park in National City. With GOT MILK?, attendees will also be able to join in on free salsa workout classes to learn how to dance their way to health while also learning about the benefits of drinking low fat milk for a healthier lifestyle.

"We know that by making simple changes to your diet and exercising through dancing, for example, can help prevent diabetes," says Katie Croskrey, American Diabetes Association Executive Director for the Greater San Diego area. "A person shedding as little as five percent of his body weight can decrease the chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes (In Type 2 Diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy) by nearly 60 percent."

The upcoming free health fair is an easy way for Latinos and their families to pick up health information, to learn about healthy eating and to participate in fun exercise programs. Patrons will also have the opportunity to receive free health screenings and advice from onsite experts. Drink & Dance Your Way to Health with GOT MILK? will take place Saturday, Mar. 7, 2009 at Kimball Park (between 12th St. and "D" Ave. in National City) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
