The transfer ensures a continuation of the Johnson Institute's formative 43-year history of promoting the power and possibility of recovery from alcoholism and dependence on other drugs.

It also bolsters Hazelden's mission to improve public awareness about addiction and expand access to treatment and recovery.

"We want to keep the Johnson Institute's legacy alive for future generations," said Mike Sime, the chair of JI's board of directors. "From the beginning, ours is a history intimately linked to Hazelden's, and with our programs and products we believe Hazelden will impact more people who need help and hope."

The Johnson Institute was founded in 1966 in Minnesota. In the decades since, millions of people have sought help through JI's innovative programming which emphasizes early intervention, family involvement and community support.

In 1998, the Johnson Institute sold more than 140 publishing products to Hazelden which since that time have been exclusively distributed by Hazelden in the marketplace with the joint imprint of the two organizations. There are products for individuals seeking recovery, their family members, schools, treatment centers, hospitals and civic organizations, among others.

"The Johnson Institute has pioneered many of the intervention and training tools used across the country today to help people find hope and healing from their problems," said Mark Mishek, Hazelden's president and CEO. "Hazelden is committed to further expanding JI's influence so that more people are educated not just about the problem, but about the solution."
