Published via the Blurb publishing platform, book will debut at South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas

SAN FRANCISCO, March 10 /PRNewswire/ – In a first-time collaboration, Blurb, the creative publishing and marketing platform, and National Public Radio’s Kitchen Sisters, Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson, today announced the launch of a new book, Hidden Kitchens Texas — Stories, Recipes and More from the Lone Star State. Inspired by their popular HIDDEN KITCHENS series on NPR’s Morning Edition, the book is a colorful, action-packed road trip exploring Texas through food — told by people who find it, grow it, cook it, eat it, sell it, share it, and celebrate with it.

Hidden Kitchens Texas is available for purchase now, in the Blurb Bookstore at www.blurb.com. Blurb and The Kitchen Sisters will feature the book at a series of launch events in Austin, Texas at South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive during the week of March 16 – 22. The official launch party will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at Ranch 616, a south Texan ice house founded by chef and owner Kevin Williamson.

“We’re thrilled to launch Hidden Kitchens Texas in Austin, where the project was born,” said Davia Nelson. “We wrote this book by drawing from hundreds of family stories, hot tips and local lore we’ve we gathered for our radio series. These short histories, recipes, and anecdotes tell the story of Texas through the relationship between food and communities. The Blurb platform gave us the control to act as producers and editors as well as authors, which was an intriguing production model for a book like this.”

Hidden Kitchens Texas was written by The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, who published the book using Blurb’s creative publishing and marketing platform. Using Blurb BookSmart(R), the company’s free, easy-to-use book design software, The Kitchen Sisters had complete creative control over the layout and design of their book. By selling their book in the Blurb Bookstore, The Kitchen Sisters were able to set the price of their book, keeping the entire mark-up rather than distributing a large percentage of the profits among middlemen.

Hidden Kitchens Texas is packed with stories of food, farm and family — Kinky Friedman’s kitchen wisdom; singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s stories of Stubb and his late-night Lubbock barbecue kitchen; Willie Nelson’s Fried Eggs, Robin Wright Penn’s Sweet Potato Crunch, Joe Ely’s black eyed peas; Sharon Ely’s Holy Posole; Astronaut Bill McArthur’s Jalapeno Space Kolache; the Birth of the Frito, the Birth of the 7-Eleven, the Birth of the Frozen Margarita, and more.
