Enduring a traumatic injury,
"It now bothers me to think that some people need to wait for an event in their lives to see the light or find a quest," Barnes writes. "In fact, all it takes is a blink of an eye, and a change can affect your whole future ... The question is, are you ready for that moment to make a difference in your life?"
"My Miracle" follows Barnes' life from his early childhood through defining moments and learning experiences that made him into the man he is at 38, including a major turning point that would change his life forever. Barnes traces the trajectory that his life took, from being highly motivated at an early age to losing focus in his adolescence, which only led to an early adulthood bereft of a goal or path towards becoming a man.
Then, Barnes' life was shaken by a traumatic incident that landed him in the ER as he was slipping into a coma. After two emergency surgeries, Barnes began the long road to recovery through rehabilitation and reflection. Months after the accident that changed his life, Barnes found solace in God. He writes:

I unquestionably realized that only God was. I saw my spiritual existence as a building block in constructing a meaning for my life. This construction also involved who I was as a person. It was obvious that the future of my life was already outlined. I just did not see the outline. My process of development continued in a positive direction. I felt stronger about my life and who I was. I noticed that some people moved on with their lives without even caring about themselves or others around them. ... There might be a person somewhere out in this crazy, wonderful world who might be looking for or needing to find you. Or, it could even be the other way around. For some god-forsaken reason, this might be to show affection or some kind of support.
