Smith: Richardson taken off life support
British-born actress Natasha Richardson has been taken off of life support at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, veteran gossip columnist Liz Smith said.
Smith wrote on the Web site wowowow.com that the 45-year-old film and stage star, who suffered a head injury in a Canadian skiing accident Monday, was removed from life support at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The New York Post later said an unnamed source also told it Richardson had been taken off of life support.
Several media outlets quoted unnamed sources close to her family as saying the actress was declared brain dead Tuesday.
Richardson’s loved ones and professional representatives, however, have not yet issued an official statement regarding Richardson’s accident or condition.
The actress’ husband, actor Liam Neeson, and their two sons, as well as Richardson’s mother, aunt and sister — actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave and Joely Richardson — have all been at the hospital, Smith said.
The Post said Richardson’s ex-husband, theater and film producer Robert Fox, as well as actress Meryl Streep and author Joan Didion also went to the hospital to say goodbye to Richardson.
Richardson appeared in the movies Gothic,
Blow Dry,
The Parent Trap,
Maid in Manhattan,
Asylum
and The White Countess.
She won a Tony Award for her work in the Broadway revival of the musical Cabaret.
