Borders(R) and Waldenbooks(R) Promote Summer Reading for Kids Through Book Drive

Event benefits needy children in communities throughout the nation

ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The long days of summer provide the perfect backdrop for young kids to discover the joy of books and reading. Borders is helping to ensure that children have plenty of summer reading choices through a company-wide, community-based book drive that officially begins April 3. Staff at nearly 1,000 Borders and Waldenbooks stores nationwide will encourage customers to purchase new children's books, which will then be directly donated to a local charity chosen by each store.

Hundreds of non-profit organizations across the country will benefit from book drive, which concludes April 24. This year's recipients will include organizations such as Special Olympics of Minnesota, Hull House of Chicago, Henry Ford Hospice-Sandcastles, Lighthouse Rescue Mission, Radys Children's Hospital, and various libraries and literacy programs as well as local Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the nation.

Whether searching for a beloved classic from their childhood or discovering a new favorite author or illustrator, customers will enjoy browsing Borders and Waldenbooks stores' selection of thousands of titles. The retailer expects some of the most popular books donated to include "Junie B., First Grader: Dumb Bunny," by Barbara Park; "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak; "Skippyjon Jones" by Judy Schachner; "Monday with a Mad Genius," by Mary Pope Osborne and many others. If they choose, customers can also purchase at most Borders stores nationwide while supplies last "Baxter the Bunny," an adorable brown-and-white bunny with pink ears and a fluffy pink nose, which stores will donate to local charities in time for Easter.
