K.D. Wentworth Takes Over Editing Reigns From Science Fiction Legend and Mentor Algis Budrys

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- K.D. Wentworth - a successful science fiction novelist who was first recognized as an early winner of the worldwide Writers of the Future Contest -- has been appointed editor for the acclaimed L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Anthology series now in its 25th year, it was announced by Author Services, Inc.

Wentworth takes over the editor slot from science fiction writing and editing legend Algis Budrys, the Anthology's original editor and the first coordinating judge of the Contest, who passed away shortly after completing work on last year's collection of winning stories and illustrations.

"I am honored to assume the editorship of this distinguished publication, which has been the stepping stone to a career for so many new writers of the last 25 years," said Wentworth in accepting the position.

"K.D. makes a perfect choice as a testament to the Contest itself after getting her first break with us 20 years ago," said the Contest's Director Joni Labaqui in making the announcement. "We're looking to K.D. to set the tone for the next 25 years of speculative fiction."

A two-time Nebula Award nominee, Wentworth has sold nine novels and numerous short stories in her writing career since becoming a Writers of the Future Contest winner in 1989. She also has maintained an active interest in the Contest, first serving as a judge in 2000, then coordinating judge, and as a co-instructor for the Writers of the Future workshops held for each years' winners.

"I'm very pleased with the selection of K.D. because she's very visible at science fiction conventions, much as Algis had been at the outset of the Contest," said Tim Powers, a fellow Contest judge and writers' workshop co-instructor. "K.D. makes a wonderful ambassador because she's one of the Contest's many success stories."

Now completing its 25th year, the Writers of the Future Contest was created by best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard to discover and encourage talented beginning writers of speculative fiction. Entry is free and submissions come in from all over the world.

Writers of the Future Volume 24 is now available online and in bookstores everywhere.
