Go West, Young Hybrid Business Model! Colorado Consulting Firm Forms L3C Connecting Business, Nonprofits and Governments

April 7, 2009

LONGMONT, Colo., April 7 /PRNewswire/ — The first L3C doing business in Colorado, interSector Partners, L3C, combines the best of its partners’ nearly 50 years of experience working for and on behalf of nonprofits, for-profits and government agencies.

Rick Zwetsch and partner, Caryn Capriccioso, organized interSector Partners, L3C in Vermont, the first state in the country to officially recognize and sign L3C legislation in April 2008. As of this date, Michigan, Wyoming and Utah have all passed L3C legislation. L3Cs organized in these states are officially recognized in all 50 states.

Mr. Zwetsch, principal partner, describes interSector Partners’ decision to form an L3C rather than a traditional LLC, “The L3C allows us to formally put our social mission before any profit motives. This hybrid business model is a perfect fit because our core beliefs focus on bringing the sectors together and blurring–if not eliminating–the lines that separate us.”

According to Robert Lang, creator of the L3C, this new business form combines the best features of an LLC with the social conscience of a nonprofit. Mr. Lang goes on to say the L3C is “the for-profit with a nonprofit soul.”

As explained on Mr. Lang’s Web site, “Foundations through the use of program related investments (PRI) and mission related investments (MRI), individuals and corporations making socially responsible investments (SRI), governments, nonprofits and market rate investors can all come together under the L3C umbrella to make socially beneficial investments that otherwise would not occur.”

interSector Partners is developing several projects designed to leverage each of these unique, socially beneficial investment opportunities to further its social mission.
