‘Mary Poppins’ set for 1,000th show

April 8, 2009

Mary Poppins is poised to celebrate its 1,000th performance at New York’s New Amsterdam Theatre, representatives for the musical said.

The show is to reach the milestone Thursday.

Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Thomas Schumacher for Disney Theatrical Productions, the Broadway production has grossed more than $132 million to date and recouped its initial Broadway investment within 52 weeks of its premiere. It has been seen by more than 1.6 million theatergoers.

Following a successful three-year run at the Prince Edward Theatre in London ‘s West End, a U.K. tour commenced last summer, garnering critical and box office success, show representatives said. A North American tour began at Chicago ‘s Cadillac Palace Theatre March 26.

The musical is based on P.L. Travers’ stories about a practically perfect nanny, as well as the classic 1964 Walt Disney film adaptation inspired by Travers’ tales.

The stage production features the Academy Award-winning music and lyrics of Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. It was created in collaboration with Mackintosh, by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, who wrote the book, and the Olivier Award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who composed new songs and additional music and lyrics.
