PolicyArchive Launches New Online Portal for National Security and Health Research Papers

Posted on: Thursday, 23 April 2009, 08:00 CDT

The Markle Foundation and PolicyArchive collaborate to create a new portal for research papers and reports that address the impact of information technology on health outcomes and national security.

LOS ANGELES, April 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- PolicyArchive.org, the leading digital library of public policy research developed by the Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) and IUPUI University Library, launches a new online portal of research documents sponsored by the Markle Foundation in New York. The Markle Special Collection focuses on the ways in which information technology shapes policymaking, particularly in the fields of health, national security, interactive media for children, Internet governance and global development.

"PolicyArchive offers a unique opportunity for us to share our insights and the results of our work in the true spirit of collaboration," says Stefaan Verhulst, chief of research at the Markle Foundation. "We believe the Markle Special Collection will be of particular value to those interested in finding new ways of addressing critical public needs in the information age."

The Markle collection is one the first of PolicyArchive's upcoming series of research collections that gather and showcase influential policy research from non-profit foundations. The Markle Special Collection highlights the Foundation's most significant publications, including reports and papers that have been instrumental in creating current laws and policies. These vital documents are now available in a forum that brings them together with other collections that address the broader spectrum of policymaking for an array of public interest needs.

"Great libraries have always had special research collections, and the Markle collection will enable PolicyArchive to highlight the many contributions the Markle Foundation has made to its fields of specialty," said Tracy Westen, CEO of the Center for Governmental Studies.

Foundations spend close to $2 billion on research every year. Once published, these documents all but disappear on the Internet; popular search engines have difficulty finding them and there is no central location where they can be distributed. PolicyArchive solves this problem by making public policy research freely available to a vast audience by placing it in a single, convenient location.

The Markle Special Collection will be an invaluable tool for researchers, academics, scholars, policymakers, legislators and anyone who is interested in the ways in which information technology shapes public policy. For more information, please visit http://markle.policyarchive.org.

The Markle Foundation works to realize the full potential of information and information technology to address critical public needs, particularly in the areas of health and national security. Markle collaborates with innovators and thought leaders from the public and private sectors whose expertise lies in the areas of information technology, privacy, civil liberties, health, and national security.
