Pittsburgh Jewish Community to Celebrate Israel's Independence

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 April 2009, 17:39 CDT

PITTSBURGH, April 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pittsburgh's largest Jewish community event of the year takes place Wednesday (April 29) with a festive and family-oriented celebration of Israel Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut.

Organized by the United Jewish Federation with co-sponsorship by the Jewish Community Center of Pittsburgh, the celebration will be held at the JCC in Squirrel Hill from 4 to 9 p.m. Thousands of people are expected to attend. Last year's celebration attracted 3,000 people.

"This year we are recognizing the 100th anniversary of Tel Aviv," said Maymon Pe'er, Pittsburgh's Community Shaliach. "There will be a special exhibit that chronicles the history of the city," he added.

The celebration will feature children's activities, folk dancing, an Israeli Shuk (shopping bazaar), food vendors, a special photo exhibit, and a program featuring an Israeli Teen Delegation from Pittsburgh's Partnership 2000 communities of Karmiel and Misgav. There will also be special programming geared toward teens.

In a demonstration of solidarity with Israel, all attendees for the celebration will join together at 6:30 p.m. on Darlington Road, outside the JCC, to sing "Hatikva," Israel's national anthem. This will be part of a global effort as the Pittsburgh participation will be video taped and then sent to Israel's Channel 2 for broadcast.

"In addition to the Israeli Teen Delegation performances, a group of nine local performance ensembles will participate in our Shirat Pittsburgh performances," said Pe'er, "The event will also feature the Israeli folk music and dance of DJ Mona of Mona Israeli Dance." Musical programs are scheduled throughout the evening.
