'The Perfect Flower': Love and Life Lessons in and Out of a Virtual Game Inspire Poetry

Posted on: Tuesday, 5 May 2009, 07:00 CDT

AUSTIN, Texas, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The popularity of computer games that create a virtual reality allow us to create our own different selves living in our own secret worlds where we can be a beautiful fashion model or an animal or a bully, and with our imagination, we can be and connect with -- and love -- others. Is this virtual reality a Utopia?

In her poetry in "The Perfect Flower" (published by iUniverse), Clare Abbey describes how something is happening in these virtual worlds, like Second Life(R)*, that many don't understand: People are falling in love with avatars, or made-up people, without even knowing them in real life. In these alternative realities, our fictional selves communicate on a soul level without consideration of social class or ethnicity. But these are games, and there are people at keyboards manipulating these avatars. Just as in real life, if you seek evil, you will certainly find it.

Abbey's poems are inspired by her real experiences and her virtual world through her avatar. "The Perfect Flower" also features her art as illustrations.

About the Author

Clare Abbey has been writing poetry for more than 20 years. This is her first poetry book, releasing just 20 poems, along with art, influenced by the virtual world of Second Life(R). Abbey graduated cum laude from University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, with a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Abbey loves nature and can often be found feeding the deer and rabbits that visit her back yard each morning, and is a fan of nature writers such as Edward Abbey, Barry Lopez and John McPhee. Retired from her profession as a grant writer for charities, Abbey spends time writing and painting.
