Silas Shabelewska's Photograph, LOVE 7, on View at the New Orleans Museum of Art

NEW YORK, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Manhattan-based artist Silas Shabelewska (http://www.shabelewska.com/) announced that her photograph, LOVE 7, from her 2008 show, PEACE & LOVE: Homage to Robert Indiana, will be included in the upcoming exhibition, "The Art of Caring: A Look at Life Through Photography," at the New Orleans Museum of Art May 16 - October 11, 2009. LOVE 7, inspired by Indiana's iconic Love sculptures of the 1970s, will be exhibited with the works of other contemporary artists including: Tina Barney, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, Larry Sultan, Tatsumi Orimoto, Nicholas Nixon and Annie Leibowitz. This exhibition explores how key life events are celebrated and honored, and how pivotal life decisions are made by different world cultures. The exhibition will center around seven themes: Love, Children and Family, Wellness, Disaster, Healing, Aging and Remembering.

"I am honored to have been chosen by the New Orleans Museum of Art to include LOVE 7 alongside the works of so many artists whose talents I greatly admire," said Shabelewska. "What better location to showcase those themes than in a city like New Orleans whose recent history has encompassed each and every one of them."

The highly choreographed series was shot at INDUSTRIA SUPERSTUDIO in New York. Working with 35 nude models arranged into the letters of the word LOVE and the symbol PEACE, Shabelewska, assisted by her husband, artist Andre von Morisse, shot the images from a 30-foot crane. The concept of LOVE permeates this body of work and mediates on the tumultuous social and political arena gripping the world today. The resulting photographs of figures dancing and floating in mid-air lead the viewer into nirvana. It is the tranquility in these photographs that has attracted the attention of dealers, collectors and editors.

About Silas Shabelewska

Born in 1963 and raised in Monaco, Polish-American Shabelewska (www.shabelewska.com) has explored photography since the age of 12. At 16, she learned the process of silver gelatin printing. In 1984, Shabelewska enrolled at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where she majored in photography, film and video. Over the years, Shabelewska has photographed art world personalities such as Leo Castelli and Helmut Newton.

Past solo shows include: The Vermeer Series (Soufer Gallery, NY); Roads America (Bjorn Ressle Fine Art, NY); Roads (Gallery Kayafas, Boston); Roads (Briggs Robinson Gallery at Soho House, NY); and Silas Shabelewska (Patrick Verelst Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium). Her work has been showcased in group exhibitions in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Miami and Antwerp. Silas lives and works in New York City with her husband, Norwegian-born artist Andre von Morisse.
